I found mold in my house or apartment, now what do i do?

What do I do with my junk while I am moving

If you find mold in your apartment or house, here's a step-by-step guide to address the issue:

Identify the Source and assess the damage.

Mold typically grows in moist environments. Identify any sources of excessive moisture, such as leaks in the roof, walls, or plumbing, and address these issues promptly to prevent further mold growth. You will also need to determine the extent of the mold infestation. If it's a small area (less than about 10 square feet), you might be able to handle the cleanup yourself. For larger infestations, or if the mold is in the HVAC system, it's best to hire a professional.

DIY For small areas 10 square feet or smaller

If you think the area is small enough or accessible enough to try to address yourself, always protect yourself by wearing gloves, goggles, and an N95 respirator mask to avoid breathing in mold spores. Seal off the area where the mold is present to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. This can be done using plastic sheeting and tape.

For small areas, you can clean mold from hard surfaces with a mixture of detergent and water, or a solution of no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Do not mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners, as it can produce dangerous fumes.  After cleaning, dry the area completely. This may involve using dehumidifiers, fans, or increasing ventilation.

Removal of Mold Infested Surfaces

Porous materials, like carpet or ceiling tiles, that have mold growth may need to be thrown away. Bag and seal these items before removing them from the contaminated area. Then you can repair any damaged areas where moisture has seeped in, and replace materials that were mold-infested and could not be cleaned.
