Safe and Responsible Boat Disposal
Removing an old boat in Chowan Beach near the Chowan River often turns out to be more complicated than expected. Boats may contain fuel, oil, and chemicals that must be drained. The AAA Rousse crew will take down the mast, clear off the gear and electronics, and cut off the flybridge if we have to, to get the job done. The majority of larger vessels are not permitted in landfills unless they undergo crushing or demolition. Trust the AAA Rousse professionals to take care of everything.
Common Boat Removal Scenarios
Boats in Chowan Beach are most often abandoned after storm surges push them ashore along Albemarle Sound, leaving hulls stranded in shallow marshes far from any ramp. Owners sometimes surrender vessels that drift into Rockyhock Creek, where low water and dense vegetation make self retrieval impossible. In these cases, Chowan County coordinates with state resources to assess, tag, and arrange professional removal before the wreck becomes a navigation hazard.
Other common situations involve sunken vessels near Edenton Millpond that become partially submerged after prolonged neglect, creating environmental concerns alongside access problems. Derelict boats blocking the Sandy Point boat launch are also reported seasonally, especially following hurricane season. Regardless of the specific location, owners are encouraged to act quickly, as unattended removal triggers county liens, salvage contractor fees, and potential civil penalties that far exceed the cost of voluntary disposal.
